The list of audit software below will help you understand what is running on your computer and for those on a network, it will listen in and inventory software running on other PC’s as well (great for network administrators).
Mark Russinovich created Process Explorer, a completely free software package that will help you audit what processes are running on your computer. It displays two windows showing dll files, processes, names of the accounts that own those processes. If you think something is running in the background and don’t know what it is, then this is the audit software for you.
This is a very cool program and 100% open source so that you can tweak it to your needs! This audit software listens on the network and will report on what type of computers are running, the software running on those computers, printers, security holes such as open ports and so much more.
The biggest use for this software is license tracking so that you know what software related to what licenses – the last thing you want is getting caught for using unlicensed software in your organization!
Reports are easy to use and understand. Auditing can be scheduled daily at whatever time you like and reports can be delivered ODF, CSV or webpages that you can view in your browser.
We are always looking to add to the list. If you know of auditing software that should be included, please leave a comment.
