11/16/09 Update:
Craig wrote in and made left the comment below. Our goal is to promote awareness and mention any dll files that may have been used by malicious programs, such as ccrptmr6.dll being used by Spyware.ChatWatch, spyware that records conversations without the user's permission and then emails a copy of those conversations to another location. Here is Craig's comment:
The fact is, this dll is a public-domain library of high-performance timers that was created 10 years ago by a respected group of developers, as part of the Common Controls Replacement Project for Microsoft development platforms (specifically, Visual Basic). It has been downloaded countless times and is still used by many legitimate programs, including ours. We have NEVER had a report of this dll or any of our software's files being flagged as malicious, and we don't take it lightly. (By the way - I scanned the dll that we distribute with the latest version of AVG just to be sure, and it found no issues at all...as expected).
Just because a malware program uses a certain shared dll, that doesn't mean the dll itself is malicious. Your page makes it seem that ccrptmr6.dll IS the malware, which in it's original form it most certainly is not. If it has been hijacked or overwritten, that's another issue. But if processes in it are simply being called by the real bad guy, that needs to be explained so that users don't just assume the dll and any other programs that use it are malicious. With that same logic, you could flag just about any of the dll's that ship with Windows as malicious and we should all just shut down our computers.
Please clarify this so that we are not hammered with people worried about our (and other's) legitimate software.
Sincerely,
Craig Starnes
