“If you have a sitemap for spiders to follow where everything is on your site, is there a way that someone could download that file then be able to access a site that had a password to enter it?” — stun-gun
Jim’s answer: “Quick answer: No. Anyone can download your sitemap file if they know the name of it — and many people reference it in their robots.txt file, which anyone can see. But passwords are not included in sitemaps, so even if someone did get your sitemap file, they could not figure out your passwords. If you don’t want the sitemap found at all, name it something other than sitemap.xml, keep it out of robots.txt, and only the search engines you registered it with will know the name.”
