What this test measures
- Download speed in megabits per second (Mbps): how quickly your connection can pull data from our server.
- Upload speed in Mbps: how quickly your connection can send data to our server.
- Ping (latency) in milliseconds: the round-trip time for a small request, useful for gauging responsiveness in video calls, online gaming, and remote desktop sessions.
- Jitter in milliseconds: variation in those round-trip times, which matters for real-time applications.
How to read your results
Higher download and upload numbers are better; lower ping and jitter are better. Some common reference points:
- Streaming HD video typically needs 5 to 10 Mbps down, with low jitter.
- 4K streaming typically needs 25 Mbps or more down.
- Smooth video calls typically want at least 3 to 5 Mbps in each direction with under 50 ms ping and under 30 ms jitter.
- Cloud backups, large uploads, and self-hosted servers benefit most from upload speed.
These are guidelines, not hard limits. A connection slightly below the numbers above can still feel fine if jitter is low and ping is steady.
Tips for an accurate test
- Use a wired ethernet connection if you can. Wi-Fi adds variation that often gets blamed on the connection.
- Pause large background transfers: cloud sync, system updates, streaming, VPNs.
- Close unused browser tabs and disable extensions that intercept traffic, such as some privacy or ad-blocker tools.
- Run the test more than once and use the median, not the highest number.
A note on accuracy
This test estimates your connection speed to our server. Results can vary based on Wi-Fi, device performance, browser, routing, and network congestion. If you live far from our server, your numbers here may be lower than what you see on tests that pick a server geographically near you, such as Ookla, Fast.com, or Cloudflare. That is normal. Speed to a single fixed endpoint is a different measurement than “best available speed on the public internet,” and both are useful in different ways.

Common issues if your numbers look low
- Restart your modem and router. Equipment that has been running for weeks accumulates state issues that can quietly cap throughput.
- Check what else is using your network. A 4K stream on a TV, a cloud backup running in the background, a game console downloading an update, or another device on a video call will all eat into your test results.
- Try a different time of day. Most ISP networks experience peak congestion roughly 7 to 11 PM local time. Connections can slow noticeably during those hours and recover overnight.
- Verify what speed you are paying for. Many users discover their test results actually do match their ISP plan; the advertised “up to” speed and the typical delivered speed are often two different numbers.
- Check for older equipment. An older router, a 100 Mbps ethernet switch, or a laptop with a Wi-Fi card from before Wi-Fi 5 can cap your speed regardless of what your ISP delivers to the modem.

What is a good internet speed?
For most households, 100 Mbps download is comfortable for streaming, video calls, and general use. Larger households or remote workers benefit from 200 Mbps or more. Gigabit (1000 Mbps) is overkill for most situations but useful for large file transfers and homes with many simultaneous heavy users.
Why is my speed test slower than what my ISP advertised?
Several common reasons compound. Wi-Fi between your device and your router introduces variability and overhead. Older devices may not have hardware capable of full speed. Peak-hour congestion on the ISP network slows everyone in your neighborhood. Your ISP advertises “up to” speeds rather than guaranteed minimums. And the test server may be geographically far from you.
Should I test on Wi-Fi or wired?
Wired ethernet gives you the most accurate measurement of your actual ISP connection. Wi-Fi gives you a real-world snapshot of what your devices experience in their normal usage spot. Both numbers are useful and they answer different questions.
How often should I test my speed?
Once when you sign up with a new ISP to confirm you are getting what you pay for, once a month for general health, and any time you suspect a problem. Running the test repeatedly in a short window gives you a sense of variability rather than a single absolute number.
Why do different speed tests give different numbers?
Different services use different test servers, different measurement methodology, different overhead compensation, and different parallel connection counts. Two well-built tests on the same connection can return numbers 10 to 20 percent apart and both be valid. The trend across multiple runs matters more than any single number.
Does this test save my data?
No. We do not store IP addresses, test results, browser information, or any other identifying data. The test runs and the numbers stay in your browser.
Why does the upload part of the test look low or stall?
On most cable and DSL plans, upload is a fraction of download by design: a “300/10” plan gives you 300 Mbps down and 10 up, so a low upload number is often just your plan being your plan. Our test opens several parallel upload connections so fast fiber lines read honestly too. If upload sits far below what you pay for, suspect a VPN or security software that inspects outgoing traffic, both slow uploads more than downloads. If the upload stage stalls completely or reads zero, something is blocking the test’s upload requests, usually a browser extension or an aggressive firewall. Try a private browsing window or a different browser before blaming the line.
The test will not load or start. What should I check?
The test runs entirely in your browser and needs JavaScript enabled, so a blank space where the test should be usually means a script or content blocker got there first. Privacy extensions sometimes treat a speed test’s rapid connections as suspicious, because heavy network activity is exactly what a speed test is. Try a private browsing window with extensions off, or a different browser. On a work or school network, filtering can block the test’s traffic entirely, so try from home before assuming a problem. And if the page loads but the button seems to do nothing, reload the page once and give it a second.
What replaced the old test
AuditMyPC has provided network and security tools since 2002 and has offered an internet speed test on this page for more than two decades. The previous version, dating to 2005, used a Java applet and a custom server protocol. Modern browsers no longer support Java applets, so we have replaced it with an open-source, browser-native test built on LibreSpeed. Old links to this page continue to work.
