If a check fails 3 times in a row, we email you, and we email you again when it recovers. Nothing starts until you confirm from your inbox.
You can also give us a phrase that should always appear on the page. When the phrase goes missing, the check fails, even if the page still loads. A status code alone is not proof a page is really there. We learned that the hard way: this site once served a dead tool page for months while the server reported everything was fine.
We look for the phrase the moment you submit, so if it is not there you find out on the spot instead of getting a false alarm later. One thing to know: we read what the server sends, not what your browser paints. If your page builds its text after loading, as site builders often do, pick a phrase from the page source or leave the phrase empty.
The free tier is 3 monitors per email address. Checks come from a single server, so treat this as an extra pair of eyes, not your only warning system for anything critical. No account, no password, and nothing to cancel later.
How it works
Type the address, add your email, and click the confirmation link we send you. Nothing runs until you do. From then on we check the page about every 30 minutes and read up to the first 1 MB of it. Three failed checks in a row count as down; the next passing check counts as recovered. You get one DOWN email, one reminder if it is still down a day later, and one RECOVERED email. While everything passes, we stay quiet.
A check passes when the page answers normally, and, if you set a phrase, when the phrase is present in the page source. The phrase is the useful part. A page can answer normally and still be broken, and the phrase check is how you catch that. If your site happens to be down when you sign up, we say so and set the monitor up anyway.
How do I stop or delete a monitor
Every email we send includes your manage link. It shows each monitor’s current state and lets you pause it, resume it, change the phrase, or delete it. Deleting your last monitor also deletes your email address from the service, right away. There is no account to close because there was never an account.
If we do not hear from you for about three months, we send one reminder, and at about four months your monitors pause themselves. Paused monitors are deleted after six months, so an abandoned monitor cleans itself up.
For site owners
Our checks identify themselves with the user agent AuditMyPC-Monitor and fetch only the exact address someone asked us to watch, about every 30 minutes. This is not a crawler and it does not follow links on your pages. If you do not want the checks, block that user agent and the monitor will pause itself within a week, or write to the contact address on our terms page and we will stop it sooner.
